Compact and precise: inductive precision displacement sensor

Robust stainless steel construction defies adverse conditions in industry, construction and nature

When displacement measurement needs to work precisely 24/7 under adverse enviriomental conditions, robust sensor technology is required. For example, sensors are exposed to heat, cold, humidity, vibrations and mechanical forces when monitoring the expansion of railroad tracks, measuring in climatic chambers, for battery cell expansion or load monitoring of foundations or bridge bearings. At the same time, the requirements for accuracy and reliability are sometimes high, even over long periods of time, such as when monitoring the movement of a dam wall. The mechanical inductive precision displacement sensor model 8742 from burster präzisionsmesstechnik shows that many such applications do not necessarily require custom-made sensors. The displacement sensor is available in measuring ranges from 0...2 mm to 0...50 mm and delivers precise measured values with a non-linearity of 0.1 % F.S. and a temperature deviation of just 0.01 %/K F.S. with a choice of 4.5 V / 9.5 V / 20 mA output in a particularly compact design (Fig.). The sensor can withstand short-term temperatures from -40 to +125 °C and long-term temperatures from -20 to +85 °C, making it suitable for measurements on heat baths, for example. The IP67 protection class enables use in wet or dirty environments.

Flexible configuration for a wide range of applications

The model 8742 can be configured extensively to meet the various requirements in industry and infrastructure. The push rod can be optionally equipped with an M5 internal thread or spring-loaded with a curved probe tip. Rod ends on both sides are also possible. The sensor housing offers various mounting options, which are also common for actuators: Flange mounting, gland mounting with ball joint heads or an installation with housing clamps. The sensor is designed for harsh environments and can withstand vibrations of up to 10 g (in accordance with IEC 68-2-6) and up to 40 g of shock (in accordance with IEC 68-2-29). This makes it suitable for particularly mechanically demanding measuring points, for example on bridge bearings, punching presses or hydraulic test systems. The high long-term stability is demonstrated by the MTBF (mean time before failure) of 350,000 h at 40 °C (application type Gf, ground stationary), which enables long-term monitoring tasks, for example on dams.

A test and calibration protocol, including details of the zero-point, nominal sensitivity and calibration step, is included in the scope of delivery. The specific configuration is mapped via a firmly defined burster order code, in which each option such as measuring range, cable length, connector or desired non-linearity is assigned a unique code number.
