Compact measuring amplifier with IO-Link

Digitise strain gauge signals in the field at the sensor

Sensors with strain gauges are used to measure forces or torques on shafts or components. In principle, they work with analogue signals. For reliable transmission over longer distances in the field, the sensor experts at burster offer the robust IP 65 plug & play-capable measuring amplifier model 9210 in an aluminium housing, which digitises the analogue signals close to the sensor and outputs them as an IO-Link protocol (Fig. 1). The very precise amplifier electronics work with a non-linearity of < 0.005 % of the final value, while a 24-bit AD converter ensures a maximum transmission rate at a measuring speed of 1000 values per second. This means that the output voltage of the strain gauges, which is typically just a few millivolts, is reliably amplified and transmitted over long distances, regardless of interference from electric motors, frequency converters, etc. in the field. For this purpose, the amplifier is connected to the master via the standardised IO-Link interface (M12). A single shielded 4-core cabel end with an M8 connector is sufficient for the sensor connection. This makes wiring simpler and more economical, as there is no need for complex analogue shielding.

Practical bonus

Multi-channel measuring tasks often arise when using force, torque or pressure transducers, for example because forces in different axes and in addition a torque need to be measured. In this case, several of the economical measuring amplifiers can be connected to an IO-Link master without any cabling effort. Functions such as peak value memory, hold function, two digital switching points and filters extend the range of applications in addition, for example to query peak values. Flexible configuration via a standardized IODD file (IO Device Description) simplifies installation or replacement.
