High-precision measurement technology - safe and robust

Reliable measurement technology products for the special requirements of components in harsh environments

Automation technology in the defense industry places very special demands on the safety, resilience, durability and maximum reliability of all components produced. Whether on land, at sea, in the air or even in space - machines, vehicles and aircraft, equipment and devices must function permanently, be of the best quality and withstand the highest loads, especially in harsh field operations.

Measurement technology with experience "Made in Germany"

Without sensors, machines are "blind"; without measuring and process control instruments, they are "deaf" and cannot be controlled. For many decades, burster's proven measurement technology components have stood for reliable data logging and evaluation "Made in Germany" all over the world. The sensor technology portfolio includes solutions for measuring force, tension, compression, torque, angular displacement and distance. From standardized products to customer-specific special sensors, the range is supplemented by everything that is needed in measurement technology: converting and amplifying signals, evaluating and visualizing, calibrating devices. In addition, a wide range of services is available that can be relied upon for questions, repair requirements or accredited calibration services.

All components are coordinated, networkable, can be integrated into any control environment via the common interfaces and communicate safely and reliably even under the strictest production and operating conditions. All products are manufactured in Germany. By using predominantly domestic or EU components, burster also guarantees a high level of delivery reliability and crisis resilience.

Areas of application from the production line to the development laboratory

The areas of application for the measurement technology components are diverse. From the recording of forces, compressions, length changes and torques to the measurement of electrical variables such as voltage, frequency or resistance, almost all areas of automated production can be covered - both directly on the production line and in the laboratory, quality assurance or maintenance. The in-house, accredited burster calibration laboratory for electrical and mechanical measured variables ensures verified or certified measuring equipment that meets the strict requirements of the industry and ensures reliable operational readiness.

Determining the center of gravity of a commercial vehicle with a crane jib enables safe operation and optimum handling of large suspended loads. The 8435 model load cell, mounted directly in the hydraulic support, meets the highest requirements, even under the most adverse operating conditions.

  • Integrated low-power electronics
  • Maximum reliability thanks to fully encapsulated, laser-welded design
  • Insensitive to lateral loads thanks to 8 strain gages
  • Can be calibrated when installed
  • Analog output 2 ... 10 VDC

During test drives on the road, off-road or in the driving simulator, the actuation forces on the pedals are measured under different operating conditions in order to create a human/machine reaction profile and determine the loads on the individual components. The special 8400 pedal force sensor used although has a flat design in order to influence tactile perception as little as possible. It is designed to be stable against lateral loads over its entire surface, follows rapid load changes, is overload protected and is easy and safe to install.

  • Non-linearity ±0.25 % F.S.
  • Flat design
  • Insensitive to lateral forces
  • Measuring range from 0 ... 500 N to 0 ... 2 kN
  • Protection class IP67

The examination of the tactile behavior of operating elements such as controllers or switches involves the precise measurement of the smallest operating forces, click ratio, block force, etc.

Special requirements

  • Small forces
  • Insensitivity to lateral forces
  • Fast response to detect detents

Solution
The precision miniature load cell model 8431/8432 is mounted between a linear unit, which is electrically operated by a stepper motor, and a plunger. This ensures precise and sensitive actuation of the switches and buttons whose actuating force and switching, latching and unlatching points are to be determined. Any lateral forces acting on the sensor axis, which could be caused by "soft" mounted operating elements, are absorbed by stabilizing diaphragms inside the sensor and kept away from the actual measuring element. This means that they have no influence on the measurement result.

  • Measuring range 0 ... 2.5 N to 0 ... 100 kN
  • Nominal temperature range -55 °C to +200 °C
  • Outstanding long-term stability, designed for high load change cycles
  • Low design effort due to simple installation and insensitivity to external forces

Flight simulators with a total weight of approx. 12 tons must be securely mounted to the floor with their driven supports in the foundation. Their flexible movement in space creates pulsating loads on the axes of the connecting elements to the foundation. The forces occurring must be measured in order to develop and monitor safe clamps and clear installation procedures.

Special requirements
The sometimes jerky movements of the drives - for example when simulating turbulence - result in high pulsating and alternating loads. Unavoidable transverse loads on screw connections must be absorbed for the measurement. Different materials to be connected, such as steel and concrete, also result in manufacturing tolerances that need to be compensated for.

Solution
A model 8438 ring load cell is integrated into the fasteners to measure the forces occurring in the clamping screws and, not least, in the dowel materials in the concrete. The sensor is securely installed by means of surrounding mechanics such as a centering sleeve and sensor support. The ball socket/ball washer combination ensures an even load distribution around the circumference of the load cell. To prevent mass grinding in the system, we recommend using an insulating washer in a suitable position.

  • Flat, disk-shaped design
  • High pulsating and alternating loads
  • Robust design
  • Overload protection

The haptic behavior of rotary switches should be measured using the torque / angular displacement. The exact determination of the torque to be applied is an important control variable for the haptic behavior of a rotary switch (adjustment force to be applied > proprioceptive perception > tactile perception).

Special requirements

  • Very low nominal torque due to low actuating forces
  • Fine angular resolution in order to be able to map fine detent points of the rotary switch

Solution
The model 8661 torque sensor measures the smallest torques over a defined rotation angle range in the forward and reverse directions with high precision and repeatability. The use of this torque sensor also reduces the design complexity, as no additional angular displacement sensor is required. The haptic behavior of the rotary switches is evaluated with the DIGIFORCE® 9307 using the torque/angle of rotation curve.

Torque sensor model 8661

  • Non-contact
  • Torque measurement < 0.05 Nm
  • Angle of rotation resolution 0.0885°

  • Seamless process monitoring
  • High sampling rate
  • Accuracy up to 0.05 %

A large number of battery cells are required for the production and installation of high-performance battery modules for electrically powered drones. During incoming goods inspection, important battery parameters of each individual cell must be measured and evaluated quickly and reliably within very short cycle times. After simultaneously contacting 8 cells for two 4S packs, the cascadable model 2511 battery measurement module measures and evaluates the open-circuit voltage and internal resistance within approx. 0.4 s and transfers them to a PLC in real time.

  • Acquisition of open-circuit voltage and internal resistance (AC to DC) of the individual cells
  • Measurement period internal resistance and cell voltage of all 8 cells within approx. 0.4 s
  • Up to 5 measuring channels per device. Can be easily cascaded on a top-hat rail thanks to its compact design
  • Connection via EtherCAT supports flexible sequence control and measurement data acquisition
  • Fail-safe and demonstrably long-term stable
