Infrastructure - safe construction, operation and maintenance

Building, operating and maintaining infrastructure measures

Whether building and operating bridges, wind turbines or other highly stressed structures, accurate measuring and monitoring systems are essential to detect loads at an early stage, ensure structural integrity and enable safe use. burster offers reliable measurement technology for monitoring forces, torques and variations in length to ensure stable and efficient infrastructure.

Bridge construction and monitoring: Reliably measuring the highest forces

Bridges are exposed to enormous loads from traffic, wind and temperature fluctuations on a daily basis. Tension forces, settlements and material stresses must be precisely recorded during construction in order to guarantee the safety of the design. During operation, continuous measurements are essential in order to detect material fatigue or structural variations at an early stage. burster offers high-precision load cells and monitoring systems that enable both temporary load tests and permanent condition monitoring.

Wind turbines: Safe operation thanks to precise anliegend monitoring

Wind turbines, whether on land or at sea, are exposed to extreme forces. The torque on the rotor shaft in particular must be continuously monitored in order to prevent overloads and achieve optimum energy yield. burster supplies reliable torque sensors that detect the smallest variations in the drive train and thus contribute to efficient and safe operation.

During installation, tie rods require constant monitoring of the clamping forces they transmit and, if necessary, rapid readjustment. This means that free access to the glands must always be guaranteed when using large, usually hydraulically operated tools. Robustness of all individual parts - including the load cell - is a basic requirement on construction sites. It must also be possible to easily remove the measuring device once the work has been completed.

Solution
With the 8438 miniature ring load cell, burster offers the suitable sensor. With its small diameter and low overall height, it is ideal for space-critical applications. The completely welded sensor body made of stainless steel with a continuous central bore ensures maximum stability.

  • Simple, space-saving installation
  • Robust design
  • Inner bore designed as a fit
  • High accessibility and therefore quick and uncomplicated retensioning possible

An uneven distribution of forces occurs in bridges due to environmental and thermal influences.

Solution
Determining the pressure conditions in the abutments of the structures enables safe operation, for example on high-speed railway lines. A customised sensor was developed for the customer for this very challenging task - also in terms of the necessary robustness and reliability. The advantage lies in the combination of particular cost-effectiveness and the indispensable features of the required performance.

  • Resistant to strong weather fluctuations
  • Flush mounted diaphragm with continuous external thread
  • Particularly stable over the long term
  • Vibration-resistant design

To the MySensor solution

An elongated buoyant body, which is braced to the seabed with three ropes, is stimulated to move by shafts and transmits mechanical energy by rope to a generator, which is positioned on the tower of a wind turbine and protected from seawater. What is new about the development is above all the trajectory of the floating body and the control strategy, whereby up to 80 % of the incoming wave energy can be utilised to drive electrical generators.

Special requirements

  • Very stable long-term behaviour
  • Highest repeatability
  • Compact torque sensor
  • Broadband energy absorption to compensate for possible fluctuations in the supply voltage

Solution
The model 8661 torque sensor is permanently mounted between two couplings. The couplings make it possible to compensate for misalignments in terms of height and angle offset as well as length compensation. The measurement signal for torque and speed is available to the user for further processing as an analogue or TTL signal. Optionally, the measuring data can also be evaluated digitally via the USB interface.

  • High accuracy
  • Stable mechanics
  • Maintenance free operation
  • Optical signal transmission
  • Bidirectional torque measurement
