The metrological part of the high-precision RESISTOMAT® model 2304 automatic measuring and testing machine works according to a further developed 4-wire method. The voltage drops with impressed current are measured not only on the test object, but also on an internal reference resistor. The quotient is calculated from both voltage drops and the ohmic value of the test object is determined by multiplying it by the sensitivity of the reference resistor. In addition to the elimination of contacting and transition resistances, this method has the advantage that errors only depend on the quality of the internal reference resistors. A high-precision, wire-wound and artificially aged ZERANIN® resistor is installed for each measuring range. The deviations of the reference resistors are known exactly and are considered in the multiplier. The result is a fast and very accurate determination of the resistance of the device under test, regardless of the resistors in the circuit.

In order to meet high requirements, an A/D converter with high resolution and particularly low linearity deviation / linearity error was specially developed for this device. Ohmic test objects are measured bipolar, although parasitic thermoelectric voltages are eliminated. The applied quotient measuring method with constant comparison automatically ensures zero-point and calibration at all times - thus always guaranteeing maximum accuracy.

Comprehensive software is programmed into the device as standard:
Storage of measured values of cooling curves, temperature compensation, class divisions, statistics functions, compression and interface driver, clock, mains frequency adjustment and so on. 2 microprocessors ensure optimum and exact measuring and testing procedures.

The 2304-P001 operating software and a device driver for Lab Windows are available for PC users.

The measuring and testing machine combines high accuracy, high variable resolution and long-term stability with versatility and simple operation. A wide range of permanently installed programmes facilitate the display and evaluation of measured values for the user. 

The areas of application are therefore very broad:

  • High-precision measurement of ohmic and inductive resistances in the laboratory, testbays and production.
  • Series tests - programmed frequency distribution with switched outputs per class, specification of tolerances in absolute or relative values.
  • Compensation in production - particularly easy due to the quasi-analogue and spread bar display with limit value overlay.

Measurements on coil, motor and transformer windings - special regulation of the measurement current before disconnecting the measuring leads:

  • Recording of cooling curves on windings - adjustable time intervals, measured values stored in memory.
  • Metre tests oncabel ends and wires - with temperature compensation and measured value output in Ω or Δ %.
  • Determination of specific resistances - with material-related temperature compensation.
  • Measurements on cable drums - with temperature compensation and measured value output in Ω, Ω/m, Ω/km.

Specification testing of copper, aluminium or brass wires

SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENT

Several aspects must be considered when testing wires, such as

  • contact in four-wire technology
  • precise length determination
  • temperature compensation of test objects

Copper has a temperature coefficient of about 0.4 %/K, this means if not considering the temperature at an ambient temperature of e.g. 30 °C, the measured value will be 4 % too large (based on 20 °C).

SOLUTION

The combination of RESISTOMAT® 2316 and clamping device 2381 is ideally suited for wire cross-sections from 0.1 to 100 mm2. With the adjustable clamp support the measuring length can be varied up to 1000 mm. Although only 500 mm can be measured, the RESISTOMAT® can still show the resistance in ohms per meter. Clamping devices for larger cross-sections up 2500 mm2 are also available.
