8712, 8713Potentiometric displacement transducers
Durable and flexible! Ideal for direct and persistent measurement of small mechanical displacements. Thanks to the spring-loaded push rod, no positive connection to the object to be measured is required. Probe roller and additional probe tips available as accessories.

These displacement sensors are potentiometric displacement sensors for direct measurement, testing and monitoring of small mechanical displacements. A positive connection with the measurement object is not required due to the spring-loaded push rod.
A prerequisite for very long durability is that the direction of movement of the measured object and the push rod are parallel.
Areas of application are displacement measurements on
- Electromagnets
- Hydraulic cylinders
- Switches and buttons
as well as measurements of
- Deformations
- Deflections
- Press-fits
- Feed paths
Due to their technology, potentiometric displacement sensors always work with a wiper system. The resistance tracks are trimmed in special processes for low friction, low stick-slip tendency, abrasion resistance and long-term constancy.
The push rods are guided in durable, low-friction and close-tolerance plain bearings, which ensure long durability and high accuracy. Preloaded coil springs press the probe tip onto the measurement object. They are double-guided and disappear in the end position in the probe head.
A stainless steel ball is embedded in the probe tip. The bore in the rear push rod stop is used for coupling back feed devices.
The push rod is secured against rotation up to a measuring range of 50 mm. The probe head (hexagonal.) must not be twisted with a tool. This will destroy the anti-rotation device.

- EtherCAT, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP capable measuring system
Description
Battery trays must be carefully designed because they must protect the batteries, the heart of any electric vehicle, in the event of an accident. At the same time, it must be ensured that the battery trays can be opened if necessary, e.g. for maintenance of the battery cells. During the production of the battery trays, the bottom plate and the cover are connected by means of nuts. This connection must be secure, have guaranteed tightness, e.g. against dust, and be resistant to water pressure, as the battery cells are located in the space between them.
Special requirements
- High manufacturing quality of the battery trays
- Highest safety requirements
Solutions
Self-piercing nuts are used for the connection between the base plate and the cover. The press-fit process must have a 0-fault tolerance, which can be guaranteed with burster's process monitoring technology. The miniature ring force sensor 8438, which measures the press-in force, the potentiometric displacement sensor 8713, which determines the press-in displacement, and the combination of measuring amplifier 9250 and fieldbus controller 9251, which can be addressed with up to 8 measuring channels via a fieldbus interface and record and transmit the measured data, are used.

TASK
The flatness of a workpiece needs to be measured. To do this, measurements must be taken at three points to determine whether the workpiece is within tolerance. The results from these measurement points are compared using an electronic analysis unit. If the workpiece surface is found to be out of tolerance, the unit must immediately indicate the point at which the maxima have been exceeded. In addition, a visual display is required to make it easier to identify such workpieces.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT
High sampling rate, high-speed switching of limits.
SOLUTION
burster displacement transducers are used at the three measurement points. All displacement transducers from the burster range are suitable for use here. A SENSORMASTER 9163, with two main inputs, performs the analysis. The unit uses the two mathematical functions "Fin.A" and "Fin.B" to determine the mean values. To do this, the user assigns each of the inputs and the function "Fin.B" to a limit switch. These switches are configured as a direct-switching, symmetric alarm with hysteresis for minimum and maximum values. The process-value display can be configured to show a change in display colour as soon as one of the limit switches is active. In this case, the limit indicators show which measurement value is out of tolerance. Using the RS232 option with the 9163-P100 measurement data software, a PC can be employed to log and archive the measurements. This process can be automated by the controller communication tool included in the software.
