The measuring element of the load cell consists of a double bending beam to which strain gauges are applied. The measuring bridge is detuned by the force applied so that a proportional output voltage is generated. Although the strain gauges on the measuring element are protected against dirt and splash water by a rubber bellows.
The sensor can be easily mounted using two mounting holes. The tension or compressive force to be measured is applied perpendicular to the sensor axis at the opposite end.
Due to its special design, the influence of an extension (e.g. probe finger) on the measurement signal is minimal. Overload protection can be realised with little effort by means of a mechanical stopper.

Task
The requirement is to test the characteristic curve of micro-switches on the production line. This quality assurance measure requires a load cell with overall height and overload protection, which safeguards the load cell from damage caused by an inadmissibly high operating force in a faulty switch. A set-screw limiting the travel of the 8511 load cell provides overload protection. The measurement displacement is measured alongside the operating force, and the force/displacement curve analyzed by a DIGIFORCE® 9311 connected to the sensors.
