This miniaturised load cell in relation to its measuring range enables universal and reliable use in industry and in the laboratory. It is particularly suitable for measuring compressive forces in confined structures. Made of stainless steel, the compression load cell can be used in a wide range of industrial applications due to its compactness.
Examples therefor are
- Press-in force measurements on longitudinal and transverse press connections
- Compressive force measurements on punching and rolling devices
- Spring force measurements on vehicle shock absorbers
- Compression force determination on push rods
- Compressive force measurements on pneumatic Articulated lever presses
The force to be measured is applied centrally and without lateral force via the top of the "cap-shaped" sensor.
Strain gauges are applied to the inside of the outer surface of the sensor element and connected to form a full bridge that emits a bridge output voltage directly proportional to the measured variable when force is applied.
The base surface of the pressure transducer must rest on a smooth and flat surface. Contact adhesive or silicone, for example, can be used for installation. To achieve optimum accuracy, no lateral forces must be allowed to enter the sensor.
Clamping forces acting on the side of the sensor must be avoided at all costs. During installation, care must be taken to ensure that the cable outlet and the sensor cable are not subjected to impermissibly high tension and bending forces.
The output signal is standardised to 1.5 mV/V in the sensor's connection cable. This means that several sensors can easily be connected in parallel or replaced without having to recalibrate the downstream electronics.

- Optimum adjustment to given conditions
- Variable measurement range of complete system
- Implemented using standard products
TASK
In the custom machinery sector, special annular load cells are sometimes needed that have a large internal diameter in order to accommodate bulky workpieces or tools. Usually the quantities required are too low for it to be economic to produce a short run of custom sensors.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT
- Standardized output signals for analysis of sensor results by a measuring instrument
- Technical solution using standard products
- Rigid and compact system
SOLUTION
Three burster 8402 miniature load cells are mounted on a base ring of the required internal diameter, spaced apart by 120°. The sensors are held in their position in the plane by a guide ring, which fits around the sensors with sufficient clearance and is connected to the base ring by locating pins. The force is applied via a third, through-hardened ring, which is connected to the two other rings by locating screws. Conical spring washers are inserted beneath the screw heads to provide a stable initial load throughout the assembly. The burster 9243 instrumentation amplifier can be used to provide excitation for the three sensors and to output a summated value of their measurement signals. The complete assembly therefore looks and behaves like one sensor and can also be calibrated as such. Apart from price, there are further reasons for favouring this solution:
- It takes far less time to manufacture the three rings than to produce a custom sensor.
- Since the sensors are all standard components, there is a guaranteed ready supply of spare parts.
Branchen

- Miniature design
- Rigid construction
- Robust
- Can also tolerate impact loads
task
The requirement is to measure the pressing forces of rollers, for instance the forces needed to deform sheet metal in steelworks. The load cell must be fitted in the roller bearing blocks such that the sensor can detect the forces in the direction of action of the rollers. This requires a suitable guide. The load cell must be able to absorb any transient load peaks such as can inevitably occur when starting up the machine or with inhomogeneous material.
Branchen

- Small nominal distance
- Rapidly rising force characteristics
- Pre-loaded load cell
- Fits into a small space
Task
Inside the tool of a die-cutter is fitted a load cell under spring-loading. The spring force holds the sensor body in place and ensures that all the components contact one another with zero backlash in their direction of action. The load cell itself must occupy the smallest possible space, to prevent weakening the construction of the tool unnecessarily. Yet at the same time it must be repeatedly capable of absorbing the sudden jumps in force that occur during the machining process. The measurements from the load cell are ultimately an indication of the level of wear to the cutting tool and hence the quality of the punched edges.
