The model 8417 load cell measures the tension or compressive force between the two axially mounted, metric external threads on the cylindrical sensor body. The forces are only introduced via the threads, which are designed to be particularly long to accommodate lock nuts, for example, and must be free from external influences such as bending, lateral force or torsion. Contact with attachments on the sensor housing, including the end faces, must be avoided.

The measuring element is a rectangular diaphragm with a full bridge of strain gauges applied to the inside, which expects a stable excitation voltage and has a nominal sensitivity of approx. 1 mV AC. The connection cable is routed radially out of the cabinet through a sleeve that serves as strain relief.

task

The transmitted forces in vehicle bowden cables need to be measured in test beds. These forces vary according to length, pre-tension and radius of curvature of the installed cable. Extreme temperatures also affect the measurement. In addition, the tests must measure the long-term performance of the cables and the attenuating effects of the wires on transmission of the pulling forces. The 8417 load cell is ideal for this purpose because its negligible intrinsic weight means it has no effect on the measurement and hence does not distort the result. This is particularly important when the dynamic behaviour of fine wires needs to be assessed.
