The 8431 and 8432 model series are among our most precise and at the same time mechanically robust miniature load cells. High accuracy, fine measuring range graduation, simple load application via the opposing threaded connections and small dimensions of the sensor body open up a very wide range of applications in the laboratory and production. In many applications, its complex design with integrated stabilising diaphragms and overload protection reduces the addition of external overload protection and guidance of the parts introducing the force. As a result, less space is required, less material and weight is used and, last but not least, there is hardly any friction on components that could falsify the measurement result.
The force to be measured is introduced centrally and axially into the cylindrical sensor body through the two external threads in the tension or compressive direction. This requires the sensor to be mounted without the front of the sensor housing coming into contact with attachments. Two stabilising diaphragms inside the sensors of the smaller measuring ranges reduce the lateral force and torque influence to a minimum and ensure high long-term stability of the measurement on the mechanical side. Even if the precision miniature load cell keeps external forces away from the measuring element due to its design, torsional and bending moments on the sensor axis should be avoided. The sensors work independently of position. They have an active side that acts directly on the measuring element, while the passive side is firmly connected to the cabinet.

SOLUTION
The precision miniature pressure sensor should be installed between a linear unit operated with an electric multiphase motor and a tappet. This ensures the exact and sensitive activation of the switch and pushbutton, whose actuating force, switch points, stop points and release points should be defined. Any lateral forces on the sensor axis which might be caused by the "soft" placement of operating elements are absorbed by the supporting diaphragms inside the sensor and kept away from the actual sensing element. This prevents them from having any influence on the sensor results.

In instrument-making and precision engineering, sensitive parts such as hands and needles need to be fastened to spindles. Handling must be delicate enough to avoid damaging these intrinsically lightweight components yet firm enough to ensure they sit securely in place. The 8432 load cell chosen here, with integral mechanical overload protection, is designed to measure small loads in a very sturdy package. In addition, any lateral forces that inevitably arise in this process and produce a bending moment on the sensor axis have no impact on the measurement accuracy.

Task
A multipurpose tool is fitted with several load cells, operated by push rods. First the tool presses the separate parts together. Next, specially designed flanging is reshaped in order to join the parts securely together. The 8431 load cell is ideal for fitting in the limited space available and for the required easy replacement. Thanks to its built-in support diaphragms, there is no need for any additional guidance mechanism for transferring the force.

Task
As an alternative to fixed-contact power rails and busbars, backplanes with spring contacts enable individual testing and replacement of a battery’s cells. Dimensional accuracy and spring characteristics are critical to the quality of such contacts, so 100 % checking has to be carried out on each contact terminal.

Lösung
By means of an automatic X/Y positioning unit, each spring contact is positioned under an electrical linear actuator with a 8431/32 strain gage force sensor mounted on the front end, and a test stroke is initiated orthogonally to the spring contact. Depending on the design of the spring contact, a test stroke of typically only < 1 mm compression is performed within the permissible elastic spring deflection. The DIGIFORCE® 9307/9311 process monitoring can record the quality-relevant parameters of initial height h0, spring rate and hysteresis, and check them for compliance with tolerance specifications. An OK/NOK evaluation and measured values for reporting are made available at various interfaces.
