The tension/compression load cells from the 8523 series are suitable for a wide range of applications. One of the advantages of the sensors is their three cutting supports, which make tilt-free installation possible. Equipped in this way, very good measurement results can be achieved even if the system surface is not optimised.
The force to be measured is introduced into the centric internal thread in the tension or compressive direction. Using force introduction knobs from our accessories programme, pure compressive forces can be measured without complex mechanical integration of the sensor. With the help of the optional load centering plates, tensile forces in rods or chains can also be recorded very easily.
The sensor contains a bending diaphragm to which strain gauges are applied and connected as a Wheatstone full bridge. If the sensor is subjected to a tension or compressive force, the ohmic resistance of the measuring bridge changes and detunes the output signal in mV/V in proportion to the measured force.

Task
The poles of individual cells are welded in a vehicle battery assembly system. The poles of the up to 64 cells are connected with electrically conducting busbars using a laser welding procedure. In addition to a high degree of positioning accuracy a defined press-on force during the process must be 100 % guaranteed. In order to reduce the testing and cycle times, a force measurement is carried out at 8 poles in each case within the range of 400 to 500 N simultaneously. Measured value transmission takes place via 8 cascadable bus-capable instrumentation amplifier series 9250 and a PROFINET fieldbus controller model 9251 to a central control unit in real time.

Task
Pretesting of a carbon quick-release axle for mountain bikes needs to be performed without having to invest in a costly test system. A 8523 load cell provides the answer. The test setup in the form of balancing scales is equipped with a long balance arm in order to be able to add weights comfortably by hand. To avoid lateral forces on the load cell, it is important that the balance arm is set exactly horizontal and mounted in friction-free bearings.
